Using Dye To Perform Swimming Pool Leak Detection

by admin on June 18, 2011

The fact that swimming pools have dropped in price in recent years means that an ever increasing number of people are having them installed.  Whilst having a pool of your own that you can use when you like is fantastic, it can prove frustrating if something goes wrong with it.  A frequent and annoying problem can be having a leak that you are unable to locate.  Here we discuss how the use of dye could simplify your leak detection

How a dye test works

Trying to achieve leak detection through use of a dye test is by no means a foolproof or conclusive method.  You cannot simply put the dye in the swimming pool and expect it to magically find the leak for you.  Yet the process of adding dye to your pool can be useful in leak detection and is certainly worth trying.  The test can prove to be particularly useful if you have an inkling of where the problem lies or suspect a particular area.  In this circumstance you would add some dye to the area and then see how the dye reacts.  If the dye rocks with the motion of the water and simply diffuses into the water over the space of a few minutes then you haven’t found your leak.  If you have placed the dye in the right area of the pool then the dye will be drawn towards the leak, which should be easy to see.

Applying technique

The most difficult part of the process can be applying the dye.  Whilst the dye is manufactured in a way that enables it to stay together quite well in water, you should try to minimise disruption to the water in the area that you are applying it.  With this in mind, most swimming pool dye comes complete with a long application syringe that allows you to inject the dye, whilst minimising underwater current.
